The Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior is proud to recognize faculty, staff, and trainees on their recent achievements.
Dr. Roya Moulana was selected as the recipient of the prestigious "Devneil Vaidya Junior Faculty Teaching Award” for 2021 by ADMSEP. The award recognizes a promising early career who is already demonstrating excellence in teaching, mentoring, and curricular innovations related to medical student education. She was also awarded the Innovation Award by GWIMS (Group on Women in Medicine and Science). The Innovation Award's purpose is to acknowledge a female UMMC faculty member who has achieved significant innovative academic accomplishments. Presented to an individual who has developed original, new, novel, inventive, and/or creative programs, projects, initiatives, or other endeavors that ultimately contribute to the accomplishment of the institutional missions of education, research, and/or patient care.
Dr. Ian Paul was named the Evers Society M2 All-Star Professor for the second year in a row. Dr. Paul was also selected by the School of Medicine to be a member of the inaugural cohort of six faculty in the Education Research Grant Academy for the coming year. He will be developing a grant proposal for curriculum development aimed at increasing medical student incorporation of mental health, substance use, and suicide risk screening in primary care practice.
Dr. Crystal Lim was awarded the Shining Star Award by GWIMS (Group on Women in Medicine and Science). The Shining Star Award's purpose is to acknowledge a female UMMC faculty member who are in the middle phase of their careers and have exhibited academic accomplishments in leadership, teaching, mentoring, and/or service.
Dr. Lais Berro was awarded the UMMC Trustmark Postdoctoral Fellow Award.
Dr. Kevin Freeman's research was featured in the April 5, 2021 issue of NIDA Notes (see here).
Dr. Sally Huskinson has recently been appointed as the Basic Science Research Director for the Center for Excellence in Developmental Outcomes Research (CEDOR) at UMMC. Externally, Sally will serve as the Secretary for the International Study Group Investigating Drugs as Renforcers (ISGIGAR), and as Guest Editor for the special issue of the journal Perspectives on Behavior Science, entitled “Applications of Quantitative Models”.
Dr. Daniela Rüedi-Bettschen was appointed to Assistant Professor.
Dr. James Rowlett who filed a U.S. and International Utility Patent Application for “Novel Compounds for Treatment of Benzodiazepine Misuse/Use Disorder”, prepared by Workman Nydegger Intellectual Property Law of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Dr. Sabrina DeLeon (Psychiatry resident) was invited to the virtual Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry (ADMSEP) 2021 conference this month where she was awarded the Innovation in Medical Education Award for her project “Understanding the Complexities of Sex Trafficking” where she helped co-create a brand new medical student curriculum at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center School of Medicine.
Jaren Reeves-Darby, a Neuroscience graduate student working in the labs of Drs. Donna Platt & James Rowlett, on receiving a F31 grant from NIAAA, entitled “Alcohol-induced decreases in REM sleep: GABA-A receptor subtypes”.
Congratulations to Bailey McPhail, Garner Fincher and Barrett Aldridge, research staff in DNBR, on receiving their Master’s in Biomedical Sciences from UMMC in May.
Dr. Dustyn Baker (Chief Fellow for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry) will join Dr. Dustin Sarver in a CHAMP team presentation titled, “Pivoting With the Pandemic: Challenges and Successes of Child Psychiatry Access Programs Nationwide," at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in October 2021.
Dr. Sara Porter (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellow) will join our former faculty colleague, Dr. Bev Bryant, and others for a presentation on evidence-based screening, assessing, and treating sexually abused children, at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in October 2021.
The American Medical Association (AMA) and the Satcher Health Leadership Institute (SHLI) at Morehouse School of Medicine are proud to announce the selection of 12 dynamic physician-leaders as the inaugural cohort of fellows for the AMA-SHLI Medical Justice in Advocacy Fellowship including one of our very own, Dr. Avani Patel. The fellows were selected from over 300 applicants from across the United States and represent a diverse field of medical professionals in multiple specialties. Together, the fellows will generate and exchange solutions and implement health equity projects that inform policy to ensure optimal health for all. Under the mentorship of renowned multidisciplinary health equity experts, fellows will mobilize to be part of the next generation of advocacy leaders, driving meaningful policy and structural changes that produce equity and justice in the communities they serve.
